Raajje TV aired hidden camera footage of a grinning Sheikh Shaheem getting it on with some buruga clad female.
Now, I have yet to see a Maldivian who hasn't engaged in casual sex, but just look at this man's resume!
- Served as Minister of State for Islamic Affairs
- Pushed for the original draconian Religious Unity Regulations
- Has led hundreds in Friday prayers at the country's central mosque
- Prominent advocate of 'sharia' punishments such as flogging for 'adultery'
- Vocally protested last month to 'protect Islam' against corrupting influences
Considering all that, it would be just too easy to join in and revel in the hilarity of the moment.
Instead, I'd like to remind Maldivians that this right here is the biggest problem with theocracy and "God's law" - we only have vain mortals around to implement it.
This is absolutely why we cannot have afford to have religion in politics; those in power who seek to impose rigid "morality" on others seldom apply these scruples to themselves.
Ghalib put it most appropriately:
"The Sheikh hovers by the tavern door,
but believe me, Ghalib,
I am sure I saw him slip in
As I departed."
