Audible words

Tonight, on an impulse, I decided to download and listen to an audiobook.

Somehow the idea of being read to rather than reading has never really appealed to me. I've tried listening to Podcasts and such before, but got bored quite quickly every time.

Reading remains one of the most satisfying things I do. The idea that I can create entire worlds, characters, plots and emotions in my head that are different from what anybody else imagined while parsing the same written symbols is just fascinating. (It also explains why I almost always hate the movies based on the books I like)

But tonight, I downloaded Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes - and listened to a female voice narrating 'A Case of Identity' as the good Dr. Watson.

And I admit. It turned out to be kind of nice.

After over a decade of desperately trying to figure out how to read my books while also dealing with the mundane but inescapable chores that life throws at us, this seems to be quite an elegant solution.

Right now, I'm working at a decent pace while also simultaneously listening to Steve Jobs' biography - and I'm surprised to know that I'm able to do both effortlessly.

Like Jobs himself is purported to have said: "I've finally cracked it!"

~Peace!
