No doubt about it, Maldivians are the world's truest Christians.
We're far ahead of any western country; far ahead of even the Vatican. Heck, we Maldivians leave even the Pope in the pale when it comes to moving to passion and raptures at the mere sight of the Holy Cross. If only the Vatican knew... they'd probably anoint us all Catholics.
Why am I uttering these blasphemies? Well, ask the Maldivian authorities who sincerely believe in the majestic sway of the Cross over Maldivians' fickle minds.
A Maldivian teenager can wear offensive slogans, pornographic images and Satanist symbols on their T-shirts and walk freely in the Capital. (You've seen them too) But try walking in the streets wearing a Cross, and you'll make it about 10 steps before the Star-Force pounces on you and hauls away your Christian ass to jail.
That's how much we believe in the power of the Crucifix. The mere sight of one can make us Christian.
It doesn't even have to be a Crucifix. ANY image of a straight line intersecting another straight line perpendicularly is apparently enough for Jesus to wield his heavenly magic.
Remember how in the heydays of the 'democracy' movement mudslinging, there were accusations that the gate of Anni's house had a 'Cross shape' on it? And how, long before the ICRC was established in the Maldives, our pharmacies had already taken to displaying a Red Crescent instead of a Red Cross on the their signboards. (Never mind that the Red Cross and Red Crescent logos are actually copyrighted, and meant for identification on the battlefields)
A bottled water company in the Maldives recently earned the ire of religious nuts who found the subliminal cross on the caps of their bottles. I like to imagine that after sipping the holy water, at least a dozen Maldivians were left irreparably Christian. (Surely that's not outside all realms of possibility? It was after all a CROSS! *gasp*)
I'm not exaggerating at all. If anything, I'm understating our intolerant, and often hypocritical, racism.
The Customs at the Maldivian airport still confiscates Bibles, Crosses and yes, CDs. (Can we imagine a day when other countries like India begin confiscating our Qur'ans and praying mats at their airports? And perhaps burn them?)
DJ Majeed ordered a ban on a website on the Internet because it promoted Christianity. (And a couple of other websites because they blasphemed against DJ Majeed)
Why didn't DJ Majeed simply ban the internet? Well, there's something about mentioning 'Jesus' in the thaana script that's simply more scandalous, unlike all the other thousands of Evangelical websites that don't commit this blasphemy. Hell, even writing 'Allah' in the thaana script is considered sacrilegious. Which proves my point that we Maldivians attribute the same divine considerations to both Allah and Jesus.
Yes, we Maldivians consider ourselves and our language too inferior. (Nothing in Islam forbids you from writing 'Allah' in the thaana script. Go ahead, try it yourself. Did you get struck by a thunderbolt? Didn't think so)
The funny part is that some religious hypocrites find it really hard to mention 'Jesus' without making some mocking comment alongwith it. Funny, because any 'Muslim' who doesn't believe in Jesus is just kidding himself. Jesus is as much a part of Islam as Christianity. The followers of Jesus are also assured of heaven like the the followers of Mohamed.
If you thought the powers of Christ and the Cross were all that overwhelmed Maldivians, you forget our most POTENTIAL LEADER - the Pope.
Ah, the good ole' Pope! To this day, Maldivian channels don't show his images on TV.
The prevailing logic, I assume, is that Maldivians - at the merest sight of the Pope - will ditch their meek, pagan religions, and follow in the true path of Christ. It tickles me to think that there's a rule-book somewhere at TVM that says 'Thou shalst not broadcasteth images of the Pope, for verily, we are all sinners'.
Not even Catholics attribute that much power to the Old man in White hat (and these are the most dogmatic, superstitious and ritualistic of all Christians we're talking about)
But Maldivians? We attribute SUPERPOWERS to him! If this doesn't prove that Maldivians consider the Pope to be divine, what else will?
Something about Maldivian religious hypocrites is that, apart from practising Christians, they also consider all Atheists / Agnostics / Buddhists and about any non-Muslims as 'Christian'. It betrays their mind-numbing ignorance (as usual) of the world outside, and confirms that most of the Adhaalath and Salaf sycophants in our country have put their brains into deep freeze.
What else can explain why Anni was accused of being a 'Christian' while also having a 'Hindu temple flower' as his election symbol?
(Sort of like the Republicans in the States, who criticize President Obama for being a devout member of a radical black Church for 20 years while ALSO simultaneously accusing him being 'a Muslim'. Oh. AND a Nazi AND Socialist AND Fascist AND Marxist AND Elitist also all at the same time. Umm.. yeah. Whatever)
Strangely, for all our paranoid fear of reverting to our default Christian status, Maldivians seem to have no qualms about flaunting flags of England, Greece, Scandinavian countries, etc during the World Cup and Olympics. ALL OF THEM have a prominent cross on them.
Christians! All of us!
Now that I think about it, perhaps the presence of the Union Jack in our history explains the psychological grip of Christianity on us Maldivians.
Anyhow, having seen a bit of the un-Islamic side of life, I can confidently say that Maldivians are truly the truest of Christians , for spending more time thinking about Christ and the Cross than any of my Christian friends.
~Peace!
